These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are famous by. At first, just third-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to register john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed 3rd-level names remained working.
